1. Why is your quote higher than another contractor’s?

Every contractor’s scope, preparation methods, materials, and workmanship can be different. Our pricing reflects the complete project, not simply the concrete itself.

We handle excavation, base preparation, forming, reinforcement, concrete placement, finishing, and cleanup with our own team. This allows us to maintain control over the quality of each stage of the process.

We focus on proper preparation, quality materials, and workmanship built to perform for years to come. We may not always be the lowest quote, but we believe our clients should understand exactly what they are paying for.

2. What is included in your concrete installation?

Our standard concrete installation includes the following, with the exact scope adjusted to suit the requirements of each project:
 

• Removal of existing concrete, base, or other elements where required

• Excavation and removal of unsuitable or organic material.

• Installation of a minimum 6" granular base

• Mechanical compaction to 95% Standard Proctor Density (SPD)

• Forming, with a minimum concrete thickness of 5" or greater depending on the application

• Reinforcement using 15M rebar, wire mesh, or other reinforcement as required

• Epoxy doweling into existing concrete where required

• Exterior concrete poured using a minimum 32 MPa concrete mix with appropriate aggregate

• Finishing according to the selected finish and application

• Early-entry saw cutting of control joints, generally within 24 hours of placement

• Sealing where applicable

• Final cleanup and removal of forms

3. Do you offer a warranty?

At Stewart Concrete & Groundworks, we stand behind the quality of our workmanship and the materials we use.

For your peace of mind, every project is backed by a one-year warranty covering defects in workmanship and materials, beginning on the date of substantial completion.

Our warranty does not cover damage or conditions resulting from circumstances outside of our control, including improper use, third-party work, ground movement, or the natural characteristics of concrete.

4. Do you handle excavation and preparation yourselves?

Yes. Excavation, grading, base preparation, forming, concrete placement, and finishing are completed by our own team.

We also own and operate our own excavation equipment, compactors, skid steers, and dump trucks. Having our equipment and hauling capabilities in-house allows us to manage the project efficiently from excavation through completion without relying on outside equipment operators or trucking companies.

This gives us greater control over scheduling, site logistics, and production, helping keep projects moving efficiently and minimizing delays caused by coordinating multiple contractors.

Proper preparation is a critical part of a long-lasting concrete installation, and keeping these stages in-house allows us to maintain our standards throughout the project.

5. Why does proper preparation matter so much?

The finished concrete is only as good as what is underneath it.

Proper excavation, granular base preparation, grading, drainage, and compaction are critical to the long-term performance of a concrete surface. We take the time to properly prepare the site before concrete is placed because inadequate preparation can contribute to settlement, cracking, drainage issues, and premature deterioration.

The preparation work may not be the most visible part of the project, but it is one of the most important.

6. How do we book with you?

Booking your project is simple.

Once you have approved your quote, we will provide our agreement and required warranty information for review and signature. A 20% deposit is then required to secure your project in our production schedule.

Once your project is booked, our team will confirm your anticipated start window and stay in communication with you leading up to the work.

7. What materials do you use?

We use materials selected for the specific requirements of each project, with an emphasis on durability, performance, and long-term value.

Our standard exterior concrete installations use a minimum 32 MPa concrete mix, with the appropriate aggregate and reinforcement specified according to the application. We also use quality granular materials for base preparation, professional-grade reinforcement products, and appropriate concrete sealers and finishing products where required.

Material specifications can vary depending on the project, but our approach remains the same: use the right materials for the application rather than compromising on the components that are difficult to replace once the concrete is installed.

8. How long will my concrete project take?

Project timelines vary depending on the size and complexity of the work, site conditions, access, weather, and the selected finish.

Because we own and operate our own excavation equipment and dump trucks, we are able to manage much of the work and material handling in-house. This gives us greater control over production and helps keep your project moving efficiently without unnecessary delays caused by coordinating outside equipment or trucking.

Some projects can be completed within a few days, while larger or more detailed installations may require additional time. We will provide an estimated timeline before your project begins and keep you informed if conditions require adjustments.

Our priority is completing the work properly and efficiently, without sacrificing the quality of the installation to meet an arbitrary deadline.

9. When can I use my new concrete?

Concrete does not reach its full strength immediately after it is placed. Although the surface may appear finished within hours, the concrete continues to cure and gain strength over time.

Light foot traffic is generally permitted once the concrete has sufficiently hardened, while vehicles and heavier loads require additional curing time. The appropriate timeframe will depend on the concrete mix, weather conditions, application, and other project-specific factors.

We will provide specific guidance for your project before you begin using the new surface.

10. What causes concrete to crack?

Concrete is a natural material that undergoes shrinkage and movement as it cures and responds to changes in temperature and moisture. Cracking cannot be completely eliminated, but proper construction practices can significantly reduce the risk and help control where movement occurs.

Our approach includes proper excavation and base preparation, appropriate concrete thickness and reinforcement, suitable mix selection, drainage considerations, and correctly placed control joints.

The goal is not to promise that concrete will never crack. The goal is to build it correctly and use proven construction methods to minimize cracking and control movement wherever possible.
